At the October Council Meeting, a motion was passed to introduce free disability parking in Burnie. This will take effect as of today (Tuesday 31 October 2023). Please be advised that the arrangements for the new disability parking are as follows:

  • The free parking is limited to the existing Designated Disability Zones and the Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP).
  • Free disability parking in the Designated Disability Zones is for twice the stated timeframe on the parking signage. For example, if the parking signage in the area states a time-limit of 1 hour, then disability parking permit holders are allowed to park for free in the Designated Disability Zone for 2 hours. If the parking signage in the area states a time-limit of 2 hours, then disability parking permit holders are allowed to park for free in the Designated Disability Zone for 4 hours, and so on.
  • However, if you hold a disability parking permit and you are parking in a regular car parking space that is NOT within a Designated Disability Zone, you will still need to pay for the parking as per normal and once this paid period is expired, then you will receive the same period of time in free parking. For example, if the vehicle displaying a disabled parking permit is parked in a regular car park with a 2 hour time limit, you must pay for the first 2 hours of parking but you will receive a second 2 hours of parking for free. But in these circumstances, please ensure your vehicle is displaying its disability parking permit.
  • If you are parking in the Designated Disability Zones in the Multi-Storey Car Park, the free parking is unlimited but you will need to ensure that you exit the car park before 6.20pm (before the ticket booth closes) to avoid being charged the exit fee. To obtain the free parking, please take your ticket to the customer service booth at the MSCP and the friendly staff will validate your free parking. For first time users, you will need to take your disability parking permit to the customer service booth and your permit details will be recorded so that you do not have to take the disability parking permit to the customer service booth every time you visit the MSCP. Please note that disability parking permit holders must display their permit in their vehicle and also be parked with a Designated Disability Zone in the MSCP to receive the unlimited free parking.
