Council has installed a new sign in Burnie Park that details the biography and military honours of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, who was born in Burnie.

The new sign is next to the official memorial sign that was installed in September 2023 following the decision by Council to officially name the road in Burnie Park as Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Drive

Burnie-born Corporal Baird served with the Australian Army’s elite 2nd Commando Regiment and was awarded Australia’s 100th Victoria Cross after he was tragically killed in action while courageously drawing fire away from his team during operations against insurgent forces in Afghanistan on 22 June 2013.

Corporal Baird was previously awarded the Medal for Gallantry for his heroic actions while engaging against the Taliban in November 2007.

A detailed account of Corporal Baird’s military service can be found here on the Australian Army website

Corporal Baird’s father Douglas said the additional signage would help visitors to have a better understanding of Cameron’s service and his heroic actions in service of his country and his mates.

Lest we forget.
