Burnie’s Marine Plaza will be buzzing on 6 July with the first day of trading for the new Burnie City Market.  Burnie is known as the City of Makers and our local makers and creators will be out in force for the Burnie City Market, which is sure to be the perfect showcase for their high-quality creations and produce.

Applications from stall holders wishing to participate at the first Burnie City Market already exceed the 61 spaces that are available, so shoppers will be sure to find something of interest on the day from what is expected to be a capacity number of stalls.

The Burnie City Market is a new initiative hosted by the Burnie City Council that will be held on the first and third Saturday of each month from 8.30am to 1pm.

The markets are expected to attract many members of the Burnie community into the CBD, also benefitting neighbouring bricks and mortar shops, with some retailers commenting that they are looking forward to seeing more potential customers on what is usually one of the quietest days of trading for some.

Having a regular city market was one of the significant pieces of feedback that came from the community when developing Council’s Strategic Plan Making a Better Burnie 2044, and we are so pleased to be able to bring this to fruition. The launch of the new Burnie City Market is an effective way to enhance the liveliness and activation of our CBD.

Mayor Teeny Brumby said: “We want this new market to be a great success so that it becomes one of the must-do things in Burnie.  To coincide with the launch, we are offering those that wish to check out the market – 3-hour free parking in the Multi-Storey Car Park on 6 July – so there is no reason to not check it out!”

The Burnie City Market is a re-branded market that replaces the former Farmers' Market held at Wivenhoe, which for many years has been a much-loved and familiar part of the Burnie fabric.

Angela Cannell, Market Manager said: “We thank all of those in our community that have supported the Farmers' Market over such a long period of time, and for those that have contributed greatly to offering this market to our community.  We appreciate and value your efforts.  We now encourage everyone to get onboard and support the new Burnie City Market, right here in the CBD.”
