NRM crew busy with plantings
Published on 18 July 2024
Council’s Parks and Reserve’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) crew has had a busy planting season making Burnie better with a total of over 6,000 local native plants already planted, or to be planted over the next month. This contributes to Council’s Strategic Plan’s Goal 3, by improving sustainably of the built and natural environments.
This planting work began at Burnie Park, which received 1,720 plants as part of the Oldaker Falls capital works project. This area was rejuvenated through continuing the removal of invasive species and replacing them with local native species.

Montello Gully is being regenerated by removing invasive species and replacing them with 650 natives.
Council have continued work rejuvenating the Shorewell Creek by planting 1,570 local native species in the riparian zone. This will improve the important nature corridor for fauna species and everyone that uses the area for leisure activities.
We’ve been joined by the Hellyer College Outdoor Education students (pictured above), who have planted 500 plants with three classes. They have also helped with a clean-up of the creek, removing 550kg of rubbish which is a huge effort. 🙏

TasTAFE was also involved with students from the Conservation and Ecosystem Management course, learning through this partnership with Council by planting another 500 native local species in Shorewell Creek. Council have applied for a Federal Government grant to rejuvenate Shorewell and Romaine Creeks with a decision on the application due in late August 2024.
Work has begun at Romaine Creek with 1,100 plants being planted in the riparian zone upstream of the dam. This will provide more shading of the creek and support all animals that use it as a corridor and habitat.
Council is soon to collaborate with Cooee to Camdale Landcare to plant 1,330 plants at Cooee Beach in the next month.
Council volunteers are also helping with this project and if you would like to be more involved in NRM work through the Council please register through the Council website.
Thanks to all involved!
Great work by the NRM crew, including TasTAFE Students.
