Burnie City’s Council’s Environmental Health Officers Amanda and Emily have been recognised for excellence in their work for Burnie City Council by being awarded the honour of Tasmanian Environmental Health Team of the Year 2024.

The honour was announced at an awards event hosted by Environmental Health Australia (Tasmania) in Devonport on 12 September.

Commenting on the award, Emily said she and Amanda “were very much surprised, but greatly appreciate the recognition” for the hard work they do in what is a very challenging occupation.

“It’s nice to be recognised for the hard work we put in and what we’re passionate about,” she said.

Environmental Health is a very broad discipline and it is the role of Environmental Health Officers to reduce and mitigate any health hazards caused by the surrounding environment. They assess health risks in the environment and develop, regulate, enforce and monitor laws governing public health in order to uphold and advance good environmental practices and human health. Water borne diseases, food borne diseases, air pollution, noise pollution, public safety and communicable diseases are some of the areas monitored and controlled by Environmental Health Officers.
