Burnie City Council has welcomed the announcement of $500,00 from the State Government towards upgrading the McKenna Park Facility.
Included works are:
- removal of the wall separating small and large lunge areas
- upgrading the kitchen and include a revamped kiosk
- provide a servery window at the front of the building
- construct a continuation of the existing veranda and build a weather-wall for protection
- remove walls between kitchen and storeroom
- renew floor coverings, and paint and plaster walls and ceilings
- renew electrical components
- install POS tills and electrical items relevant to future operations; and
- install solar panels
"This project will provide the community a new refurbished social lounge with a revamped design. These upgrades will encourage our community to have greater use of the facility, providing a positive economic and social impact." Burnie City Council Mayor Teeny Brumby.
The funding commitment is on the back of a survey conducted by Labor senator for Tasmania Anne Urquhart after calls for upgrades.
Senator Urquhart said from the 100 responses to the survey it was clear there was support for the upgrades among the community. "It's a real community hub," she said. "We've done the work, we've gone out and asked the community about the support, and whether or not they would use it. The community will have better facilities to enjoy, and McKenna Park will attract more people and raise extra funds."
Work commenced in November 2024, and is expected to be completed in 2026.
