a) Bitumen Surfacing Services 2024-2025 – Contract 2713
Due to the size of this year’s reseals Contract, it was decided to split the contract into Urban Portion A and Urban Portion B.

Roadways Pty Ltd have been awarded Part A (Rural and Urban Portion A), Part B (supply), Part C (Portion A) and Part E (associated civil works for portions)

Hardings Group Tas Pty Ltd for Part A (Urban Portion B), Part D (Portion B) and Part E (associated works for portions).
b) Burnie Cultural Precinct – BAFC Redevelopment (Stage 2) – Contract 2711
Construction of the Atrium space, previously the external courtyard is well underway. Steelwork is erected and glazing for the roof is complete. The surrounding roofed area is framed and clad. The blockwork lift shaft is fully complete with the lift lid in place. Major external ground works were undertaken during August/September with fire mains and new water line laid around the building. This included new fire hydrants and booster assembly. Set-out and excavation of the external western link from the car park to the new entry has commenced.
c) Bitumen Surfacing Services 2023-2024 – Contract 2705
Hardings have completed remediation works to failed sections of the Brickport Road reseal. The remaining reseal for this Contract is Ocean View Lane which will be completed after stormwater works and Telstra works have been completed. Works are anticipated to be completed mid-November.
d) Mount Street/Three Mile Line Road Roundabout Construction – Contract 2703
Walters Contracting have completed majority of works to the roundabout. Pavement is in dry back and sealing works will be completed in October school holidays. Once seal has been places traffic island and linemarking will be installed, followed by street lighting by TasNetworks.
e) Coastal Pathway – Contract 2702
Asphalt works are continuing and revetment of the banks to protect against erosion is underway. Opening has been scheduled for 24 October 2024, landscaping is underway, and planting works will be completed prior to end of December.
f) Burnie Gateway Project
Site works are now complete and Council are investigating options for the pedestrian crossing.
g) City Centre Urban Plan
The Draft Urban Plan will go back out to the community on 27 October 2024 for two weeks and then be finalised and submitted to Council in December. RPPP applications for Stage 1 funding have been submitted. Advertisement has gone out for applications to the Urban Plan Working Group and close on 17 October 2024.
h) South Burnie Beach Boat Ramps Redevelopment – Timber Jetty Upgrade and Concrete Pier Works – Contract 2701
Buildrite have completed works to the stepped concrete pier. The site is inaccessible until Hardings have completed the Boat Ramp Refurbishment in early October.
South Burnie Beach Boat Ramps Redevelopment – Contract 2700
Hardings have completed majority of works on site. There is a portion of asphalt to be laid in the first week of October followed with line marking. Site should be reopened to the public for full use by the end of the first week in October.
j) Burnie Cultural Precinct – BAFC Redevelopment (Stage 1) – Contract 2694
The café area is complete both internally and externally. Laying of Bluestone paving to the external slabs has been delayed to ensure pavers are not damaged through adjacent external works. The pavers external to the café will be laid early October. Pavers under the entry canopy will not be laid until some further external work can be completed as these “tooth” into the external pavement. The southern entry is substantially complete with “nose” of the canopy delayed. The structure for this is now in place and the remaining cladding will be installed once this arrives on site.
k) Flood Recovery Projects
Oonah Road East
Works to the culvert on the hairpin have commenced, once this section has been completed another section of pavement will need remediation works prior to the road being reopened to the public. This is due to the multiple HV loads of imported fill to the affected area, has had a detrimental impact on the road surface. Oonah Road is anticipated to be reopened for full use by Christmas.
Upper Natone Road – Horseshoe Bend
Road remains under traffic management with a 5T load limit still in place. Drainage and landscaping works have been completed. Geotechnical report has supported the realignment of road section along Patons Creek. Consultant Engineers are progressing with design. Construction is scheduled to commence in late Spring.
Fernglade Road
Retaining wall construction has been completed with safety barrier reinstated. Sealing works will be completed as soon as practical. Road is still under traffic management until sealing is complete.
l) Metro Bus All Access Upgrade
Works have commenced on disability compliance upgrades at bus stops around the municipality with an anticipated completion date of 18 October. Two sites on Mooreville Road and Three Mile Line Road are to receive new shelters at a later date.
m) Kerb Ramp Upgrade Program
The 2024-25 Annual Program commenced with five sites selected. Construction at the Burnie Lawn Cemetery is complete, with seven kerb ramps installed, allowing disability access to the plots. One site at Edwardes Street is under construction and due for completion by 16 October. Works on the 2023-24 Program carried through to this financial year and completed by Hardings, with ramps installed at Roslyn Avenue and Malonga Drive.
n) Eastern Promenade Staircase Extension
Stubbs Constructions completed works to extend the staircase on 30 July. A precast staircase was fabricated in their works yard and craned into place. Stainless steel handrails were installed to match the existing rails. The staircase now extends below the existing water table, ensuring storm surges and sand erosion won’t affect its usage.
o) Footpath, Kerb and Channel Program
Works at Morris Street and Turrung Street, Cooee were completed by Hardings in July. Morris Street works included new kerb ramps and a connecting footpath to the new Coastal Pathway. Turrung Street saw the removal of severely undulated pavers and replaced with concrete, matching previous works on the street.
p) Disability Parking Bay
Works have been completed by our construction crew to install a DDA compliant parking bay outside the City Offices in Wilson Street. These works also replaced the crossover for the driveway to the City Offices underground car park to achieve new kerb levels for the DDA bay.
