Project Updates January 2025

a)    Bitumen Surfacing Services 2024-2025 – Contract 2713
Roadways Pty Ltd and Hardings Group (TAS) Pty Ltd have started the civil works associated with their respective bitumen surfacing sites. The civil works include replacing damaged kerb and channel, footpath, driveway crossovers, kerb outfalls, gully pits, etc. The reseal sites have been marked up and the Contractors will start works on their return following the Christmas holidays.

 

b)    Burnie Cultural Precinct – BAFC Redevelopment (Stage 2) – Contract 2711

The steelwork for the Atrium walkways, landings and stairs has been installed with timber framing commenced. Externally, Atrium walls are complete and clad externally. Internally, the majority of the walls are plastered with battens installed for the timber feature cladding.With the crane for steelwork erection no longer taking up residence in the art gallery, works in this area can also proceed. Works in remaining internal areas are well advanced.

 

c)     Bitumen Surfacing Services 2023-2024 – Contract 2705

Ocean View Lane is the last site remaining for this Contract. Hardings have completed stormwater upgrades at the site, with Telstra due to commence pit relocations works mid- January 2025. Once completed, no Hardings will complete the reseal works.

 

d)    Mount Street/Three Mile Line Road Roundabout Construction – Contract 2703

Walters Contracting have completed construction of the roundabout and is now in full use. Street lighting will be installed in the New Year.

 

e)    Coastal Pathway – Contract 2702

Construction of the pathway and erosion works are now complete, and the official opening occurred on the 24 October 2024. Landscaping is underway and planting works will be completed prior to end of April 2025.

 

f)      Burnie Gateway Project

Site works are now complete and Council are investigating options for the pedestrian crossing.

 

g)     City Centre Urban Plan

The Draft Urban Plan will go back out to the community on 13 January 2025 for two weeks and then be finalised and submitted to Council in February 2025. RPPP applications for Stage 1 funding have been submitted.

 

h)    South Burnie Beach Boat Ramps Redevelopment – Contract 2700

Hardings have completed all works on site. There is some non-compliance with existing parking layouts allocated for boat trailer parks. New signage was installed prior to Christmas to assist with compliance.

 

i)      Burnie Cultural Precinct – BAFC Redevelopment (Stage 1) – Contract 2694

The bluestone paving external to the café was completed in October 2024. Laying of Bluestone paving to the external slabs has commenced with the completion of adjacent external works. Additional pavers have been ordered to complete the area outside the building envelope. Cladding of “nose” of the canopy is complete with only minor flashing works to be undertaken.The Town Hall balcony is completed, awaiting install of new seating. External works linking the new entry to the car park, including paths and stairs, is nearing completion.

 

j)      Flood Recovery Projects

Oonah Road East
Works to the culvert on the hairpin are nearly complete. A heavy rain event in November 2024 caused minor washout and some rework, putting the reopening now at mid-January 2025. Once this section has been completed another section of pavement will need remediation works prior to the road being reopened to the public. This is due to the multiple HV loads of imported fill to the affected area and has had a detrimental impact on the road surface.

Upper Natone Road – Horseshoe Bend
Road remains under traffic management with a 5T load limit still in place. Drainage and landscaping works have been completed. Geotechnical report has supported the realignment of road section along Patons Creek. Consultant Engineers have finalised design with construction due to commence early in the new year.

Fernglade Road
Sealing works have been completed and road is open and back to normal use.

 

k)     Metro Bus All Access Upgrade

Works on all but two bus stops around the municipality are now completed and operating. Shelters for Mooreville Road and Three Mile Line Road bus stops are due to be installed in late January 2025.

 

l)      Kerb Ramp Upgrade Program

The 2024-25 Annual Program commenced with works completed at the Burnie Lawn Cemetery and Edwardes Street, South Burnie. Works are due to commence on the final site at Strahan Street in January 2025.

 

m)   Rural Culvert Program

A culvert on West Ridgley Road at Serpent Creek is undergoing replacement, with drainage issues being addressed in the upgrade. A new box culvert has been installed and road base material compacted in preparation for resealing works in early January.

 

n)    West Park Cycle Track Resurfacing

Resurfacing of the cycle track began in October 2024, with Hardings removing the existing asphalt and replacing it with a more durable layer to minimise cracking.  Blacktac is currently applying the acrylic surfacing, which is expected to be completed by 26 December 2024, in time for the New Year's Eve Athletic Carnival.

 

o)    Reserve Footpath Renewal

Approximately 350m of gravel footpath has been replaced at Romaine Reserve with a wider concrete path. The increased width provides a safer space for cyclists and pedestrians to pass each other comfortably. One section of pathway is to be completed once adjacent bridges are upgraded later in the financial year.

 

p)    Netball Centre – Court Resurfacing

Hardings have commenced resurfacing works at the Netball Centre. The existing surface has been removed, and drainage improvements are underway, both within and around the courts. Excavation revealed substandard base material, which is being replaced prior to asphalt sealing.

 

q)    Romaine Dam Outlet Valve

GHD has been contracted to design a replacement outlet valve, waterproofing, chamber upgrades, and pipe relining for Romaine Dam. Poly Welding Solutions has been engaged for construction, including the supply and installation of a new butterfly valve, pits and all necessary materials.
