Works on upgrading the existing deteriorated infrastructure have commenced at Romaine Dam.

The water level of the dam has been lowered and a small coffer dam has been installed (both temporarily). The coffer dam will help to ensure the aquatic life of Romaine Dam has a wet place to call home while the works are undertaken.

The below images show the current level of the dam, and the works that PWS are undergoing with the replacement of the existing valve and exposing the old water offtake pipe.

Project Overview

Council contactors PWS will be undertaking works to replace the Romaine Dam scour pipe, and refurbish/upgrade the scour pipe valve pit. The existing infrastructure is very old, difficult and unsafe to operate and if left to deteriorate further could represent a dam safety risk.

Works will include:
- insertion of a new HDPE pipe inside the original corroded steel pipe and filling gaps with a special slurry.
- Replacement of the existing valve inside the 7m deep pit in the dam embankment.
- Replacing the top few meters of the underground valve chamber and installing a safe access cover.
- Permanently plugging the old water offtake pipe that formerly supplied drinking water to Burnie many decades ago.

To achieve all of this, the level of the dam will be lowered temporarily and a small coffer dam will be installed (and later removed) inside the existing pond. This will help to ensure the aquatic life of Romaine Dam has a wet place to call home while the works are undertaken.

For a period during the works the walking track across the dam embankment will be closed to the public - signage will direct users as necessary. The main north-south walking track will remain open, however users will need to keep an eye out for workers and from time to time may need to follow their directions as equipment and materials cross the path.

Works are expected to take 4-6 weeks and will commence in early-mid January.
