Masked lapwings are protected under theNature Conservation Act 2002 and Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulations 2021. Any interference with the bird, nest or eggs is not permitted.

To deter plovers from nesting where they shouldn't, try the following strategies:

  1. Let the lawn grow longer where possible.
  2. Increase your presence in the location regularly, starting in June through August, to make them feel less comfortable, gently shoo them away.
  3. Block clear sight lines by placing garden furniture or bins around the lawn, moving them every few days to prevent the birds from getting used to them.
