East of Burnie

Heading along the Bass Highway  (A1)  a variety of itineraries can be planned for half and full day trips.

A 15min drive (18km) east of Burnie visit the township of Penguin and its giant penguin, then head inland into beautiful agricultural landscapes.  The beautiful Gunns Plains plateau is home to a wonderful cave system Gunns Plains Caves and Wings Wildlife Park where Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, Kangaroos and a vast range of animals call home.  Head further into the hinterland to explore Leven Canyon.  Track back along rural farmland roads to Ulverstone with is parklands and Dutch heritage.

The City of Devonport 40 minutes from Burnie, has a fascinating Maritime Centre, the family home of Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, the Tasmanian Arboretum and Don River Railway where you can travel by locomotive in a bush setting along the river to the sea.

The choice then is yours;  

A gourmet self drive tour of the area visiting Petuna Seafoods, Ghost Rock Wines near Port Sorell.  Anvers Chocolate, the Cherry Shed, art, craft and antique shops and some unique retail outlets in Latrobe. 

Travel to Sheffield via Spreyton to taste apple cider and locally produced wines at cellar doors.  The Town of Murals, the name aptly given to Sheffield showcases exquisite stories of the town and Tasmania through the art depicted on the towns buildings, wander the streets visiting boutique stores.

Travel further east to sample local produce at Ashgrove Cheese and Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm at Elizabeth Town. Deloraine is another delightful town full of creativity and has the southern hemisphere's largest craft festival (November).  Take a different route back towards Burnie and visit the Salmon Ponds and Ginseng Farm, Tasmanian native animals at Trowunna Wildlife Park, go underground on a guided tour through Marakoopa Caves.
